Is it really such a big deal that a family that takes home 58K has 70K in savings? That means their gross pay is probably close to 80K. I realize they have 4 kids, but even so, that doesn't sound like it should be worth of qualifying as the thriftiest family in the country.

Good point, disneysteve. It will be interesting to see why they have been given this designation... there might be more to the story that will unfold.

I watched it, and not much more about their economic situation was revealed. They do have credit card debt which they are paying back (undisclosed amount). I didn't find their lifestyle choices that unique. Some of the other guests had better ideas (furniture swap and unplugging).

I saw it too. Glad to see that living within one's means is now officiall, Oprah-decreed "in style."

So 70K in savings but carrying CC debt. I didn't see the show but that doesn't sound so impressive.

They did seem thrifty and did help another couple. But the lessons were pretty basic for most of us "pros." You know the drill: Buy what's on sale at the grocery store, get a pay-as-you-go cell-phone, all the usual. But I find those shows do increase my attention to small details and make me sometimes think more creatively.

I know I'm not the target audience for those shows. I watch and say, "Oh wow. Bag my lunch. I never would have thought of that." LOL. But I'm glad when they do shows like that because lots of people need to hear that stuff and see that normal folks with good incomes actually do those things. I thing being thrifty carries a stigma for many people like it means something is wrong with you if you don't blow $10 on lunch every day.

i wonder if oprah gave them all a free car as a reward?
