Can You Really Save 50% on Groceries?

On the news last night, they featured a young SAH mother who routinely cuts coupons and saves 50% on the family grocery bills. She does it by using the

mygrocerydeals.com website. I was intrigued and checked it out... You do have to register but once you do, it searches out all the deals at the stores you select by zip code. I tried it this morning and got a HUGE list of coupons and specials at my closest supermarkets (Lucky's and Trader Joe's). On top of being very convenient, features I like are that you can add an item to your shopping list and also get the nutritional value. This could be helpful saving me time and money. We'll see.

You really can, but it's a lot of work. Something I just don't have the time for. You do end up buying a lot of processed foods, so this isn't great for folks who eat more fresh foods. I just wish I had more time to devote to this stuff!

dmontngrey - You are absolutely right about ending up with more processed foods, which is one reason coupons haven't worked that well for me in the past. But I do like the idea of getting alerts on the specials because I see they includes meats, vegetables, fruits... and wine ;-)

Sometimes you can make those processed foods work to your advantage though. For example, getting money-making catalinas to roll for a profit and then spending them on the healthier stuff. A while back there was a deal going where you could get 10 cans of soup for $7 out of pocket and get back a $10 catalina. Nice little profit and soup can always be donated. Instead of shooting for the overage, I just rolled my catalinas into other deals in the same category to get a lot of free hot chocolate! Smile

I have started couponing to eventually lower my grocery budget (I'm getting closer to that day!) and after doing it for four months now, I save an average of 60-70% at the store. There are a lot of processed foods, but I have also used coupons on meat, produce, all kinds of toiletries, etc. Also, as dmontngrey said, it's nice to get free stuff that you can use to donate to others and overages that you can use to apply to what you really want. I have found it helpful and average about 3-4 hours a week on it (including the shopping trips), so I consider the savings worth the time spent. I am a SAHM also though and would probably find it a little harder if I worked outside the home.

It is possible. I'm not a power user of coupons, but hunt deals here and there for things we really use.

For example, I'm buying V8 Fusion juice my DD loves. Safeway has them for $2.49 this week, and I will use $1/1 to make them $1.49. That's 1/3 of regular price. I'm planning to buy at least 10 of them.
